Cheap Cable
**This is a repost from July with updated information and comparisons!
This is the third installment of a four-part series on communication and entertainment.
I’ve recommended AT&T services before, and I still feel they offer the best rates. For instance, their cheapest cable here in Chicago is $30/mo. Comcast? $41.
Let's ask the unaskable... do you really need cable? Some people feel cable is a utility the same way water and trash are utilities. I, too, understand that the world would've been a darker place without "Hey Paula", however, is there not a better (read: cheaper!) way?
Start thinking out of the box! What about an alternative to cable?
If you're a regular reader, you know I previously recommended Blockbuster. However, only their 3-DVD Total Premium Access plan can compete with cable, and it costs $35. Sorry, Blockbuster, you're just not competitive anymore.
Instead, I'm liking the Netflix 3-DVD unlimited plan: three DVDs out at a time, plus unlimited online watching (which is a huge boon) and all for just $17. Take into consideration free streaming available at the major networks’ sites, and free services like Hulu and SideReel, and replacing your cable suddenly feels possible.
What about the value of bundles, you ask? AT&T’s “Triple Pack” of landline, cable, and internet is $145/mo. AT&T offers the basic of these services, a la carte, for $50-$60/mo. Now, replace the cable with Netflix, and you're at $37-$47 which is totally awesome!
