Cheap June, Cheaper Groceries
My entire $136 savings this month was accomplished by switching grocery/drug merchants.
Jewel-Osco Vs. Market Place Food + Walgreen’s
As I continued the Just Don’t Spend Program, I decided to get serious about my grocery/drug bill. My local grocery is Market Place on Diversey, and the closest drug store is Walgreen’s. At Market Place, I was spending an average of $70/wk; and, at Walgreen’s, $25/wk.
I switched to Jewel-Osco at Broadway and Addison for the month to see how my expenses panned out. Before making a trip to Jewel-Osco, I checked out the weekly ads online, and used them to inform my list, but didn’t search out discounts or coupons from any other source.
In June, I averaged $61/wk in groceries and drug store buys. That’s a savings of $34/wk or $136 for the month. If you ever wondered how much Jewel-Osco is saving you, there you have it.
Also, I got a tip that Aldi’s is cheaper than either Jewel or Dominick’s. Aldi’s exist few and far between in Chicago, but if there’s one near you, check it out.

The Aldi tip is true. Not only is Aldi cheaper than Jewel/Dominicks, but also cheaper than Walmart, Sams, Costco.
Though Aldi's selection is limited, it is at least worth a google of "aldi chicago, il" to see if there is one not too far from you.
