Battling for a Sears Price Match

My sister's boyfriend, Mike, was blown away by the sweet deal at Fry's that we got on my parents' Christmas television, the Samsung LN46A550:  $1,099 total.  He wanted one, too!  Unfortunately, Fry's was sold out online.  Mike found a Fry's in the Chicagoland area that was within 50 miles of a Sears, and went to claim the price match, plus 10% of the difference, as is Sears' policy.  The Sears price was $1,430 total ($1,300 + tax), so Mike planned to get it from them for $1,187 ($1,079 + tax).

The Sears salesman called Fry's and found the television had sold out an hour earlier.  He denied Mike the price match.  My sister, who used to work for Sears, asked for a manager.  The manager also denied the price match.  Sis argued with the manager, pointing out that Mike would've gotten the deal an hour earlier.  The manager was resolute.  Sis asked him to call corporate headquarters, and ask if they would approve the match.  The manager refused, said the match put the television below cost for Sears, and that he simply wouldn't give Mike the price match.

Out in the parking lot, Mike and my furious sister called Sears' corporate headquarters themselves.  The representative they spoke with IMMEDIATELY gave Mike the price match, charged his credit card, and said she would fax the order to the store.  Mike and Sis marched back into the store, informed the manager that he WOULD give them the television, and waited.  The order didn't come through.

In lieu of the faxed order, Mike asked them to use the charge on his credit card as proof of purchase.  The manager found the charge, but STILL REFUSED to give him the television, claiming he didn't care what headquarters had done, Mike wasn't getting the TV "on his watch".

The next day, Mike discovered corporate headquarters faxed the order to the wrong store.  They faxed the order to the right store; and Mike went in, and picked it up in 5 minutes.  No hassle.  Mike saved $243 over Sears' price.

What do you think?  Was it worth it?  Anyone else have trouble with Sears's price match?
