Tidal Wave of Layoffs Crashes into My Social Circle
My sister's boyfriend, Mike, whom you may remember was recently Battling for a Sears Price Match and received Emergency Gifts! this Christmas from my family, was laid off from his job last Friday. Yikes! Mike is/was a statistics guy working in advertising. This is the only person I know who's been laid off in this recession.
Though, I imagine I'll know many more before the economy turns around. The arts community is small, and everyday, the marketing department at my company emails news articles about our competition; mostly, how they're biting the dust. I take it as a good sign that our director has given several interviews stating our company is fine: no changes, no layoffs, business as usual. Also, my promotion puts me in a safer position, as I'm integral to making our product.
My sister has a couple of positive points going for her as well. First, she got in on the ground floor of a new industry, so she has the highest level of experience with a rare skill set. In other words, she has no competition at her level. Second, she was given a major client just before Christmas. That client, alone, should keep her employed for the next 12 months.
I'm very hopeful that she and I will keep our jobs throughout this recession.
I'm not so optimistic about Mike's chances, however.
