Three Things I Do Right, Too!
Early Retirement Extreme talks about the three things he did right that helped him retire early. As it turns out, I am doing all three things! First, I live in a studio when most of my colleagues are living in one- or two-bedroom apartments or (worse yet) condos. I don't have the cheapest studio ever, but my rent is lower than ANY one-bedroom in my neighborhood or the surrounding area. I spend exactly 25% of my take-home pay on rent.
Second, I still don't have a car, and haven't had one since I was in college in the Midwest. I've saved untold thousands on loan payments, gas, insurance, maintenance, parking stickers, garages, and meters. Not to mention the hidden Chicago tax: unavoidable parking tickets and towing fees.
Lastly, I'm careful about purchases, and don't buy what I won't use soon and/or often. Living in a studio helps me accomplish this, making storage space precious.
How many of the three things do you do?
