Doing My Best to Limit Bridesmaid Expenses

Why is being a bridesmaid SO expensive? This was my second time being in a wedding party. My expenses were:
Airfare: $159... priceline.com
Dress: $144
Shoes: $56... Nine West
Hotel: $322... 2 nights at a 4-star hotel with a pretty good wedding rate
Gift: $53
Hair cut: $18
Dress steamed: $10
One meal: $15
Taxis: $80
Total: $857
Fortunately, I was able to avoid these additional wedding-related expenses: wedding shower travel, housing, and gift (my job conflicted), mani/pedi, an additional night in the hotel, and a rental car. The last three were suggested by the bride.
I should note that both times I've been a bridesmaid have been for the same friend.
Surprisingly, the bride didn't arrange hotel accommodations for herself, and ended up in my room the night before the wedding. However, she paid for my up-do, which probably cost close to 1/2 a night in the hotel. Also, the bride's parents drove me and several of the guests to/from the airport and paid for a casual breakfast and lunch which probably cut $120 in taxis & meals from my expenses.
