If Your Water Is Too Hot, Turn Down Your Heater

I visited my friend, John, the other day.  This was my first visit to his home.  As he was directing me to the washroom, he cautioned me that his hot water was really hot.  Boy, he wasn't kidding!  If I hadn't been warned I would've scalded myself.

John protested when I suggested his water heater was set too high, saying "It's just a really good water heater."

WHAT?  If the water is too hot, the setting is too high.  Period.  I can't give faulty logic a pass, so I asked John if he wasn't using the hottest water, what was the harm in turning down the temperature?  It might even save him some cash.

It was the appeal to his wallet that got John thinking.  He called today to say he'd checked the heater, and, sure enough, it was set to the highest temperature.  He turned it down 25 PERCENT.  I wonder what that will do to his bill?
I'm guessing it will reduce 9%-15%.

FYI, John has a gas heater, which costs half as much to run than an electric water heater.  He said it was cool to the touch, so it's adequately insulated.
