Backlash Against Coupons?

Is there a backlash against coupons?  I thought I had a fluke experience with a cashier at Jewel until I read this post at Yes, I Am Cheap.

The story goes like this:  I tried to buy a bottle of Clear Care solution with a $3 off manufacturer's coupon.  It was the only coupon I had for the purchase, and I've used this coupon successfully before.  It was not expired.

The coupon had a picture on it of three Clear Care products.  The cashier pointed to the picture and told me I needed to have 3 items.  I pointed to the print which said "a 12 oz bottle of Cleaning and Disinfecting Solution" (their emphasis and capitalization).  She pointed to the "and" in Cleaning and Disinfecting Solution, and told me I needed 2 items.  I pointed to the bottle which says on the label "One Bottle Solution for Cleaning & Disinfecting".  See?  Solution, singular.  I even explained:  one liquid; does two things.

She took the coupon to the manager's desk.

Did she not understand, or are the coupon and I suspicious?

The manager found in favor of me and the coupon, but now I wonder if Jewel told its cashiers to be vigilant about coupon abuse or misuse.  Certainly it would've been easier had she just scanned the coupon.  I've noticed that they don't let you scan your own coupons at the self-scanners anymore (CVS does); they make a cashier come over and scan them in at the end of your purchase.

Anyone else have a problem with coupons at Jewel?
