Insurance, Insurance, Insurance
With a new car came the new expense of car insurance. I already have renters insurance through Allstate. It costs $165/yr ($13.75/mo). Pretty cheap. The Prius was purchased on a Saturday, and the agent that sold me my renters policy was off work, so I called the national number. The woman who answered sounded like she was trying to help, but told me the only plan I was eligible to receive was $240/mo!!! I only agreed to it because I was in a crunch and I knew I was going to call my Allstate guy Monday morning, and he would fix it.
And, that's what happened. My agent got me into the "gold" plan. They were having a special on it, so I got a $600 deductible for the same price as a $1,000 deductible. I got multiple discounts for being an existing customer, bundling my car insurance with my renters insurance, paying a year's worth of premiums up front, and using an ACH transfer from my checking account instead of a paper check to pay. All told I paid $800 forthe year or $66.66/mo six months! How did I misunderstand that?!? That's $133/mo. Better than $240, but not great. I'm going to have to do some research.
Oh, and I just got my refund for the original car insurance plan in the mail. I didn't have to hound them to get it either, so that's something.
